When Can I Get a Mortgage if I file Bankruptcy?
Question:
Would I have to wait the entire 10 years before I can apply for a mortgage?
Answer:
NO You wouldn’t have to wait 10 years to apply for a mortgage!
A bankruptcy is reportable on your credit report for 10 years. This does NOT mean that your credit is destroyed for 10 years. According to HUD and FHA regulations, you can obtain a mortgage 2 years after filing a bankruptcy as long as you have allowed yourself to have some new, positive credit history (get a couple of credit cards post-bankruptcy filing!).
